| Wow. This week has lent new meaning to this song:
But if we are the body Why aren't His arms reaching? Why aren't His hands healing? Why aren't His words teaching? And if we are the body Why aren't His feet going? Why is His love not showing them there is a way? There is a way
I had the priviledge this past week of going on a mission trip for hurricane relief to Pascagoula, MS with my Conway church family. I was shocked. I had heard for four months how Katrina was so devastating and how people lost everything, and for some reason, my complacent heart just went on with my life thinking that they would be fine, yeah yeah, another hurricane, etc etc.... God forgive me. I stood there looking down a water-front street that was once lined with multi-million dollar homes ("hurricane proof"), manicured lawns, and personal docks, but now looked more like a third-world country than small town America. The whole city looked like that. We were able to work with the Central Church of Christ in Pascagoula to help begin rebuilding homes and buildings, and I am proud to say that I now know how to glue carpet. I kept thinking, wow, stuff doesnt matter. We get so caught up with our little busy lives, going to school, earning a dollar, expanding our wardrobe, when all of this can be swept away in a matter of minutes. The people down there, thought they had virtually nothing, were bonded together in their love for the the Lord and for each other and were committed to helping each other rebuild. Suddenly what you look like or what college degree you have or how much your salary is doesn't matter. I once heard this busy preoccupation with life termed "slumber." When we are no longer alert for the Lord we succumb to being consumed by our day planners and and checkbook and fall out of focus and into slumber.
The stuff of earth competes for the allegiance I owe only to the Giver of all good things. -Rich Mullins
I'm so thankful for God's gentle wakeup calls to my heart.
New years resolution: nothing negative out of my mouth. Yikes.... |
